Rebeca Hernandez

Rebeca Hernandez  is a dancer and choreographer born and raised in Mexicali, Mexico.  She has a B.A. in World Arts and Cultures/Dance from UCLA. After college, Ms. Hernandez danced and toured in Mexico with two different  modern dance companies from 2002-2006. Ms. Hernandez danced with Taller de Danza Contemporánea de la Universidad Autónoma de Baja California and with  Compañía Jorge Domínguez.  While performing with Jorge Dominguez, she toured alongside the Limon Modern Dance Company for the Festival Jose Limon in Mexico. 

Rebeca began her career as a choreographer when she moved to L.A in 2008. Rebeca’s choreographic process includes site-specific work, music and dance improvisation, public interventions and interdisciplinary work between musicians, multimedia artists and dancers. Rebeca is a 2012-2013 recipient of the National Performance Network Performing Americas Program in partnership with the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs’ CEI program.  She produced a performance in collaboration with performance art group Fundacion Wanna Winni as part of a one-month residency in Mexico.  She choreographed a site-specific piece for 2 L.A-based and 2 Mexico-based dancers and she also directed a short dance film in a ranch while in Mexico.  Rebeca is also a recipient of UCLA’s Hothouse Dance Residency Program for summer of 2013. She collaborated with visual artist Carolina Caycedo, who was artist in residence at 18th Street Arts Complex and presented the piece Beyond Control at 18th Street Arts Complex, Pieter Performance Art Space, UCLA’s Glorya Kaufman Hall and Consulado General de Mexico in Los Angeles. 

Ms. Hernandez has choreographed and performed in a number of venues and events in Los Angeles.  She choreographed a piece for Pacific Standard Time’s Tresspass Parade in collaboration with performance artist Raul Baltazar.  She created a piece in collaboration with Fundacion Wanna Winni for the performance art festival: PERFORM! NOW! curated by Dino Dinco. Ms. Hernandez has choreographed three community-based performances for the Day of the Dead Celebration; two at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery and one at 24th Street Theater.  She choreographed a full length piece in 2012 at the Pieter Performance Art Space.

Ms. Hernandez has collaborated with a number of L.A-based artists.  Collaborating artists include visual artists Carolina Caycedo and Andreas Gurewich, performance artists Raul Baltazar and Rafa Esparza, experimental music duo Comfort Zone, violinist David Strother, and composer Octavio Camargo. 

Internationally, Ms. Hernandez  has performed as a soloist for the Festival de Danza Contemporánea in Mexico City (2011 and 2013). She also took a group of L.A dancers to Mexicali and Tijuana to perform for the MexiCali Art Biennial in 2009 and 2010 and for the Dia Internacional de la Danza in 2013 that took place in Mexicali.
